Traditional espresso – the heart of any coffee shop

The traditional espresso machine is the workhorse of the specialty coffee shop and has been for decades with minor variations and refinements over the years. This beating heart of the shop is what makes a café a coffee shop.

Essentially, they are large boilers plumbed into a water supply with a pump and group heads which deliver the water at pressure through a portafilter to produce the coffee. Most now come with a built-in separate tank to feed a steam wand and the 1950s creations, which looked like something from a sci-fi B movie, are now smooth, chrome pieces of art sitting on your coffee bar.
