Origin of Peruvian coffee beans
Peruvian coffee boasts an intriguing history that dates back to the 18th century. Its origin traces back to 1740 when coffee seeds were first brought to Peru. The fertile high-altitude terrain of the Andes Mountains presented an ideal environment for the growth of these seeds, quickly turning coffee into a significant agricultural product.
From a historical perspective, Peruvian coffee production was initially localised and meant for local consumption. However, by the mid-20th century, coffee had become a key export commodity. In the 1970s, the government initiated a land reform policy that redistributed land to small-scale farmers, further bolstering coffee production. Peru is among the top 20 coffee producers globally, renowned for its high-quality, organic beans.
Over the years, Peruvian coffee has been lauded for its unique array of flavours, largely attributed to the country’s varied microclimates. This rich history and diverse climate have resulted in a coffee culture that is deeply embedded in Peruvian society, with the industry providing a reliable source of income for numerous communities across the country.
