It’s June, and to celebrate being half way through the year we’re showcasing a beautifully crafted coffee from Brazil.

Grown in the mountains of the Serra do Pau D’Alho in the Cabo Verde region, this coffee comes from Fazenda Palmital, a family-run farm with over a century of coffee-growing history. Today, the Rodrigues de Melo family continues that tradition, combining generations of experience with modern innovation and a strong commitment to sustainability. In fact, 35% of the farm is maintained as protected forest, while all of its energy needs are supplied by solar power.

Unusually for Brazil, every cherry is harvested by hand, ensuring only the best fruit is selected. This lot is processed using the classic Brazilian pulped natural method, where the fruit is removed before drying. The coffee is first dried on patios to 25% content moisture before being carefully finished in mechanical dryers, monitored remotely through a custom system that allows precise control of moisture levels to exactly 11%. After drying, the beans are rested in wooden silos before being hulled, sorted, and prepared for export.

In the cup, this coffee is rich, smooth, and wonderfully comforting. Deep dark chocolate notes form the foundation of the profile, complemented by creamy peanut butter sweetness and bright bursts of blood orange that bring balance and complexity. The result is a coffee that is indulgent yet lively, with a full body and a satisfyingly long finish.

We’ve roasted this lot medium-dark to emphasise its chocolate-forward character while allowing the sweeter and fruitier notes to shine through. It makes an exceptional espresso, producing a rich and syrupy cup, but also works beautifully as a filter brew for those who enjoy a fuller-bodied coffee.
