Origin of Decaf Coffee Beans

Decaffeinated coffee, commonly known as decaf, is a type of coffee that has had almost all of its caffeine content removed. The history of decaf coffee is quite intriguing and dates back to the early 1900s. It is generally believed that the concept was first conceived by a German merchant named Ludwig Roselius.

In 1903, Roselius discovered the process of decaffeination accidentally when a shipment of coffee beans was soaked in seawater during transit, removing a significant portion of their caffeine content. Inspired by this, Roselius went on to refine the process and patented the first commercial decaffeination process in 1906. His company was the first to sell decaffeinated coffee.

Since then, decaffeination methods have evolved and improved drastically. From using benzene as a solvent in the early years, the industry moved to safer and more effective methods like water processing, carbon dioxide processing, and the Swiss Water Process. Today, decaf coffee has gained significant popularity and is consumed by coffee lovers worldwide who prefer the taste of coffee without the stimulant effect of caffeine.

Finally had to concede to switching my subscription to decaffeinated at dentists request. IT IS DELICIOUS! I’m so glad. I like the ritual of making the coffee so this minor change is nothing. My friends and family have been surprised when I told them this was decaffeinated coffee – that’s how good it is. I live in Wales and have a couple packs delivered every couple weeks in the post. It’s a real treat. I feel less anxious and can still drink the coffee, even after a nice dinner in the evening! Great work Iron and Fire! I hope in time you could develop some more decaf variations such as ‘after dinner’ etc.

  4. bethanymaydavies

Love love love!! The best decaf coffee around – you won’t miss the caffeine at all!

  5. Mirek

My wife has enjoyed this for well over a year. She cannot tolerate caffeine. This medium roast offers full flavour. I’ve presented it to visitors who have not discerned the difference between caffeinated beans. Dark roasts are everywhere but this is a reliable and worthy medium roast.

  6. Paul Townsend

We adore this coffee, and have had a subscription running for over a year. We used 1+kg a month, it’s always fresh and tasty. I love the fact that there is genuinely no way to tell it’s decaf from the taste, despite people claiming that ‘they’d definitely know’ (they never do!). Service from Iron & Fire has always been exceptional, our subscription has always arrived on time, and even our postman loves that day because it makes his van smell of fresh coffee beans.

  7. Andy Hunt

Who knew I could love a decaf? But I do! Without question the best decaf I have ever tasted. I’m ordering a bigger bag immediately!

  9. Ellie

This has to be the best decaf coffee I’ve ever tried. I’ve never been the biggest fan of decaf coffee because I like it a certain way, but I love this one.

  10. Dixsimon

Great decaf popular even with those who don’t know it’s decaf
