For September 2025, we have selected Burundi Nyabiraba; a clean yet fruit-forward coffee that really shines when brewed as a filter coffee. It also makes a vibrant espresso with juicy, almost wine-like qualities. We’ve roasted it lightly to highlight its notes of cherry, nectarine, prune, and raspberry, and subtle hints of star anise and spice.

This month, we bring you a stunning natural anaerobic coffee from the Nyabiraba region of Burundi, grown at high altitudes on the lush hillsides surrounding Lake Tanganyika. Sourced from the Migoti Coffee Company, this coffee represents the best of Burundi’s vibrant coffee tradition – bright, elegant, and full of character.

Migoti Coffee was founded in 2015 by engineers Pontien Ntunzwenimana and Dan Brose to support local farmers through high-quality processing and transparent trade. Operating two washing stations in Bujumbura Rural Province, Migoti buys cherries directly from smallholders. The name comes from a local tree and the mountain where the first station was built.

The Nyabiraba lot reflects Burundi’s ideal growing conditions: high elevations (1500–2000 masl), fertile soils, and abundant rainfall. Around 800,000 families grow Red Bourbon here, producing coffees known for bright acidity, full body, and complex fruit character.

At Migoti, cherries are handpicked, sorted, and dried on raised beds by a local team of staff and seasonal workers, most of whom are women. Farmers also receive training in sustainable practices to improve yields and resilience.

This naturally processed lot was dried on raised beds, developing a clean yet fruit-forward profile. We’ve roasted it lightly to highlight its brightness, with notes of cherry, nectarine, prune, and raspberry, and subtle hints of star anise and spice. Best enjoyed as a filter brew but also striking as a vibrant, wine-like espresso.
