India Monsooned Malabar AA
A unique and special humidity-exposed matured bean with an immense flavour profile – rich and complex with spiced, smoked barrel notes.
We find this coffee is best in an espresso-based drink, although it can be brewed however you find it best due to its versatility.
Introducing Our India Monsooned Malabar AA
A very unique monsoon-matured Indian coffee bean affected by long exposure to humidity. It has an immense flavour profile – rich and complex with spiced, malty, tobacco notes. A real unique taste.
This maturation technique not only mellows the acidity of the beans but also enhances their body, creating a smooth and luxurious mouthfeel. Perfect for those who appreciate a robust and intricate coffee experience.
The Indian monsoon Malabar coffee beans roasted at Iron & Fire, really bring out notes that are reminiscent of dark, smoky libraries and billiard tables. A great digestif after a hearty meal, this coffee would perhaps pair very well with a Cuban cigar… stunning.
Origin of Indian Monsooned Coffee Beans
The India Monsooned Malabar AA is a regular Plantation AA exposed to a seven-week process that consists of exposing the coffee to the humidity caused by the Monsoon storms that hit the Malabar coastal region, located between the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats.
The origins of the Indian monsooned coffee beans can be traced back to the historical trade routes between India and Europe during the colonial period. In the 18th century, coffee beans were transported in wooden ships, taking several months to reach their European destinations.
During this journey, the beans were exposed to the moist, humid monsoon winds as they traversed the Indian Ocean. This natural aging process altered the physical and chemical properties of the beans, resulting in a unique flavour profile that was highly prized by European consumers.
These days, this distinctive ageing process is meticulously replicated in India to produce monsoon-aged coffee. Harvested beans are stored in open warehouses along the Malabar Coast during the monsoon months, where they absorb moisture from the humid air. The beans swell and change colour, taking on a rich, mellow taste with low acidity and a heavy body.
This traditional practice allows coffee enthusiasts to savour the complex flavours that once emerged naturally from long sea voyages, celebrating a unique connection between history and modern coffee culture.

One of my two regular go to coffees
Smooth and great flavour

Monsoon Malabar is, for me, the finest coffee in the world — and having tried many versions, I&F’s rendition stands apart. It has become my signature coffee.
Full-bodied, low-acid, rich earthy and smoky depth, generous crema, and a warm woody finish — without the bluntness of a dark roast.
Highly recommended!

Iron & Fire — Indian Monsooned Malabar AA
Medium Roast | Whole Bean & Espresso Grind
I have been drinking Monsoon Malabar for years — not as a preference but as a conviction. No other origin offers what this one does: a body that is dense and deeply earthed, acidity so low it is almost imperceptible — and if it is there at all, it is entirely swallowed by the complexity of the flavour profile. Having worked through multiple roasters’ renditions, Iron & Fire’s has become my permanent choice — distinct and assured even within this singular origin. It has become my signature coffee.
The medium roast is the right call. The espresso grind pulls a full-bodied, low-acid shot with a complex, spiced earthiness — tobacco notes woven through, a chocolatey undertone, and a malty warmth that lingers into the finish — all without the flattening bluntness a dark roast tends to impose on this bean.
The whole bean reveals a touch more complexity when freshly ground: faint whiskey and spiced-earth notes that recall the character of Blue Tokai’s Monsoon Malabar, though Iron & Fire’s medium roast brings its own distinct confidence to the cup.
Versatile across espresso and cafetière alike, this is a thoughtfully roasted coffee that honours the bean rather than overpowering it.
The best mainstream UK rendition of this origin. If Monsoon Malabar is your coffee, this is the one.

My go to for 2 years has been Columbian Jazz. I thought I would expand my palate a bit, so went for this Indian coffee bean. What a revelation. The taste is just as the other reviews state – less bitter and mellow but perfect for a Flat White or a Cortado.
