Introducing Our India Monsooned Malabar AA

A very unique monsoon-matured Indian coffee bean affected by long exposure to humidity. It has an immense flavour profile – rich and complex with spiced, malty, tobacco notes. A real unique taste.

This maturation technique not only mellows the acidity of the beans but also enhances their body, creating a smooth and luxurious mouthfeel. Perfect for those who appreciate a robust and intricate coffee experience.

The Indian monsoon Malabar coffee beans roasted at Iron & Fire, really bring out notes that are reminiscent of dark, smoky libraries and billiard tables. A great digestif after a hearty meal, this coffee would perhaps pair very well with a Cuban cigar… stunning.

Origin of Indian Monsooned Coffee Beans

The India Monsooned Malabar AA is a regular Plantation AA exposed to a seven-week process that consists of exposing the coffee to the humidity caused by the Monsoon storms that hit the Malabar coastal region, located between the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats.

The origins of the Indian monsooned coffee beans can be traced back to the historical trade routes between India and Europe during the colonial period. In the 18th century, coffee beans were transported in wooden ships, taking several months to reach their European destinations.

During this journey, the beans were exposed to the moist, humid monsoon winds as they traversed the Indian Ocean. This natural aging process altered the physical and chemical properties of the beans, resulting in a unique flavour profile that was highly prized by European consumers.

These days, this distinctive ageing process is meticulously replicated in India to produce monsoon-aged coffee. Harvested beans are stored in open warehouses along the Malabar Coast during the monsoon months, where they absorb moisture from the humid air. The beans swell and change colour, taking on a rich, mellow taste with low acidity and a heavy body.

This traditional practice allows coffee enthusiasts to savour the complex flavours that once emerged naturally from long sea voyages, celebrating a unique connection between history and modern coffee culture.
